Deep Tissue Optics
We read the brain in the light that survives it.
Tacit Neuroscience builds acousto-optic instrumentation for reading population activity in deep tissue — recovering the low-dimensional structure of neural computation from the photons that make it back out.
Acousto-Optics
Three instruments.
-
i
Acousto-optic tagging
Ultrasound marks a focal volume; the tagged light carries its address back to the surface.
-
ii
Wavefront reconstruction
Scattering is not noise. Given the right prior, a diffuse field is invertible.
-
iii
Manifold inference
Population activity is low-dimensional. We estimate the latent geometry directly.
Low Dimension
Thought is low-dimensional. Our tools are not.
A hundred thousand neurons move together on a surface a few dozen dimensions wide. Every instrument we have insists on sampling the ambient space instead — one electrode, one cell, one plane at a time. We are building for the manifold, not the ambient space.
